John Castator (PM)

Piedmont's John Castator resigns as Head Coach

After just one season at the helm, John Castator has stepped down as the head coach of the Piedmont football team. Castator coached the Panthers to a 1-9 record in one of the toughtest conferences in North Carolian, the SCC. Castator took over the program on Jan 22nd 2019. This is the 4th caoch to step away from a Union Co. football program since the start of 2020. Parkwood is still looking for a Head Coach to replace Tim Speakman, Forest Hills, Sun Valley and C.A.T.A. will all have new faces leading their football progarms in 2020.

Parkwood's Speakman steps away from Rebels football

After three seasons in charge, Tim Speakman has stepped down as the head coach of the Parkwood High football team.In the end, Speakman said the decision to step down had to do with his family. The long-time head coach has a daughter who is a freshman at Parkwood and a son at Parkwood Middle; he wants to spend more time with them before they are grown up. Speakman coached the Rebels to back-to-back 2-9 seasons in his first two years in Roughedge, and the program turned the corner this past season. Parkwood went 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Carolina Conference, surpassing preseason expectations. It marked the first time since 2014 that the Rebels had finished a season over .500. Speakman has coached the Rebels to a 68-11 record over the past three-plus seasons.

Jammie Deese (FH)

Baucome steps away from Spartans HC

Forest Hills is looking for a new football coach after Cory Smith announced he was resigning his position on Dec. 5. The Yellow Jackets lost four of their final five games down the stretch and finished 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky River this past season. In four seasons at the school, Smith posted an 11-34 record, including a 6-12 mark in conference play. This past season’s four wins were the most during any one season in his tenure. The team made the playoffs once in 2017. Jamie Deese takes over for Cory Smith, who resigned last month after four seasons leading the Yellow Jackets. Smith posted an 11-34 record over three seasons at the school, including this past fall when Forest Hills went 4-7 overall, 1-3 in conference and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Deese is just the fourth Yellow Jacket coach since at least 1974 joining Smith (2016-19), John Lowery (1986-2015) and Algie Faircloth (1974-1985). Deese is a Scotland County native who placed in the Shrine Bowl and the East-West All-Star Game as a high school senior.

Tad Baucome (SV)

Baucome steps away from Spartans HC

Sun Valley High School announced yesterday afternoon that head football coach Tad Baucom was stepping down after six years at the helm of the Spartans' football program. Baucom recently served as an assistant coach for North Carolina in last year's 2019 Shrine Bowl played in December. It was a fitting honor for a man who has dedicated 38 years of his life to high school coaching. In a press release posted by Sun Valley High School, "the decision to step down was made with a heavy heart, but at this time he needs to support his family through personal issues which will require more of his time outside of his teaching duties." Baucom spent 31 of his 38-year coaching career on the sidelines or in the dugouts of Union County

Shane Griffin (CA)

CATA finds their man

Shane Griffin is the new head football coach at Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA). Griffin will begin his 20th year teaching and coaching in the fall. For the past two seasons, Griffin was offensive line coach and run game coordinator at nearby Forest Hills High School. He will teach physical education and weightlifting at his new school. Griffin played college football at Wingate, where he was a three-time all-conference performer at offensive tackle.

Cory Smith (FH)

Smith exits as Forest Hills HC

The Yellow Jackets lost four of their final five games down the stretch and finished 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky River this past season. “Coach Smith has been on staff for nine years at Forest Hills High; five years as an assistant and four years as a head coach,” read a statement from the school. “We sincerely thank coach Smith for his hard work and dedication to Forest Hills athletics and Forest Hills High School. Coach Smith worked tirelessly to improve our school and positively affect the lives of our students. The positive impact he has made on our students and staff will be everlasting.” Smith was just the third Yellow Jacket coach since 1974, joining Algie Faircloth and John Lowery. Will Shipley's 255 yards rushing in the State Championship game helped him to become the newest member of the 2000 yard club Saturday night. Shipley ran all over Lee Co. on his way to being named offensive MVP for the game. Shipley is now the 7th member of the 2000 yard rushing club. Will joins Sun Valley's Albert Funderburk, Justin Campbell, Monroe's Shamir Hailey, Chase Byrum and Forest Hills Juanne Blount as memebrs of the 2000+ yard rushing club. Shipley's 2066 rushing yards ranks him 7th all time. Congrats Will!!

Monroe's sophomore WR Shaleak Knotts joined the Union Co. record book after posting 242 receiving yards on 8 catches including 3TDs in the Redhawks 43-23 win over Piedmont. The 242 receiving yards ranks 5th all-time in Union Co. history. The Monroe Redhawk record is held by Jamerious Colston with 247 yards vs. Charlotte Catholic in 2004. Union Academy's King has 2nd best rushing game in Union Co. history!

Union Acadmey's junior Isaac King had a career night in the 60-0 win over Christ the King. King put up 396 yards rushing and six touchdowns on just seven carries. King's 396 rushing yards is a Union Academy record and good enough for the 2nd for most yards in a game in Union Co. history. The Union Acadmey record was 392 yards set by Rasheed Rushing back in 2012. The Union Co. record for rushing yards in a game is held by former Sun Valley Spartan Albert Funderburk with 456 rushing yards, set back in 2014. Congrats Isaac!!

Cuthbertson's Grant will stay close to home at Wingate

Cuthbertson WR Trevor Grant will stay close to home after comitting to play football at Wingate. Grant announced his decision via twitter, "I am excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Wingate University! Go Bulldogs! #OneDog". Grant was named UCHSF Player of the Week for week 8 after racking up 8 receptions for 100 yards and a TD. Grant was named 2nd team All-UCHSF as a senior after leading Union Co. in receptions with 71 and 682 yards. Trevor was named All-SCC as a senior. Grant racked up 112 receptions for 1348 yards and 12 TD in two years of varsity football at Cuthbertson. Congrats Trevor!!

David Dohnson (CU)

Cuthbertson's Johnson steps down as head coach

Cuthbertson will begin its search for a new football head coach after David Johnson announced he is stepping down. Johnson took over the Cavalier program in 2013 after Michael Roark. Johnson ends his six years at Cuthbertson with a 36-40 record. Cuthberton's best year with Johnson was the 2014 season when the Cavs went 11-4, won the SCC title and advanced to the state 3A semi-final before falling to Weddington 24-21. Piedmont finds their man

The Piedmont Panthers will have a new man leading the football team this upcoming fall. Piedmont announced the hire on ucps.k12.nc.us, "John Castator was announced as the new head football coach at a meeting with returning players on January 11. As a 1998 graduate of Piedmont, Castator comes to Piedmont after serving as the offensive coordinator at Porter Ridge. Castator will replace Luke Hyatt after a 15-30 record at Piedmont in four years at Piedmont. Coach Castator shared with student-athletes his vision for "The Panther Way" and his plan to prepare the team for the 2019 season". GOOD LUCK COACH CAZ!!!

Warriors' James Shipley finishes Weddington career in the Union Co. record book

Weddington’s James Shipley finishes his football career at Weddington with some pretty good stats. Shipley, a 3-year starter at Weddington is one of the best all around football players to come through Union Co. in some time. Shipley finished this career as Weddington's all time leader in receptions with 150, which ties him for 8th All-Time in Union Co history. Shipley finished with 1903 receiving yards (2nd in Warriors school history and 18th All-Time in Union Co. and with 18 TD receptions (tied for 20th All-Time). James ends with 26 career touchdowns in 3 years of varsity football. Shipley was part of a Warriors class that won two state championships at Weddington. Congrats James , it’s been a pleasure.

Panthers Hyatt steps down

The Piedmont Panthers will be looking for a new head coach for the 2019 season. Luke Hyatt has stepped down as the head football coach at Piedmont High School. Hyatt was hired in 2015 following the death of Ron Massey and he’s posted a 15-30 record at Piedmont. He began his coaching career at Anson Co. where he became the Bearcats head coach in 2009 and remained there through the 2014 season. Hyatt's overall head coaching record is 42-75.

Porter Ridge's outstanding offensive lineman Will McDonald joins QB Grayson McCall in committing to Coastal Carolina to continue his education and football career. McDonald announced his committment to Coastal via twitter, "I would first like to thank God for all the blessings he has put in my life. I would also like to thank my parents and my sister for doing everything they could to get me to this point in my life. To my teammates, teachers and my coaches over the years I would liketo thank you for always pushing me to the highest level. McDonald, a 6'2 285 offensive lineman and three-year starter for the Pirates. McDonald anchored the Porter Ridge offensive line that opened holes for two 1000 yard rushers and blocked for 5539 yards of offense and 56 TDs in 2017 on their way to the 2nd round of the 4A state playoffs. Will was named All-UCHSF 1st Team, ALL-SW4A & ALL-State as a junior. Congrats Will!

Porter Ridge's outstanding kicker Jared Wheatley has change his commitment from UNCC to Vanderbilt. Wheatley announced his decision via twitter, "As a student athlete, I've always hoped to compete as a football player in the SEC. In discussions with my parents, coach Dan Orner, high school coach Michael Hertz and Kornblue Kicking, I am committing ot a full scholarship at Vanderbilt University. Through 10 games this season Wheatley is 45-of 49 on PATS and 6-of-7 on fields goals.Wheatley was named All-SW4A as a junior after going 45-of-51 on PATs and 8-of12 on field goals. Wheatley punts for the Pirates as well and is averaging 49.6 yards per punt for Coach Hertz.

Weddington's senior receiver Max Brimigion set a Weddington school record with 200 yards receiving in the 44-21 win over Cuthbertson. Brimigion broke his own recordd of 184 receiving yards he set last year vs. Monroe. Brimigion finished the game with nine receptions for 200 yards and two TDs in the win. Max's 200 recieving yards ranks him 16th All-Time in Union Co. for single game receiving yards. The record is 288 receiving yards held by Piedmont's Dan Brooks in a playoff loss to Ashbrook in 2002. Porter Ridge's Grayson McCall will continue his education and football career at Coastal Carolina! McCall announced his committment to Coastal via his twitter account, "At this time, I would like to thank all of the universities and coaching staffs for giving me the opportunity to attend their school and play this game a the next level. I am turly grateful and fortunate to be in the position I am in. I have an extremely strong support system and many people on my side that have contributed to make this possible, and I am very appreciative of each and every person. McCall, a three-year starter at QB is a duel threat for the Piraets after throwning for for 3445 yards and 34 TDs in 40 games on varsity. Grayson added 2665 rushing yards and 32 TDs in the same time. McCall was named 2nd team All-UCHSF as a junior and All-SW4A. As a sophomore McCall was anmed honorable mention All-UCHSF. Congrats Grayson!

Piedmont's Connor Purser joined the Union Co. record book after putting up 254 yards rushing in the 40-35 loss to Monroe. Purser's 254 yards on the ground ranks him 24th all-time for rusing yards in a game. Piedmon'ts Matt Price rushed for 255 vs Sun Valley in 2015. Weddington's outstanding senior WR Max Brimigion is now the 14th player in Union County history to reach 2,000 career receiving yards. Brimigion joined the 2K club after catching three passes for 99 yards in the 49-0 win over Parkwood. Max now has 97 career catches for 2,083 yards and 23 touchdowns. As a junior Brimigion led Union County in receiving with 1,366 yards and 16 touchdowns on 60 receptions. Congrats Max!

Porter Ridge’s outstanding tailback Jaylen Coleman entered the Union Co. record book for rushing yards in a game after posting 349 yards in the 56-35 win over Cuthbertson. Coleman's 349 yards sits 3rd all time just ahead of Parkwood's Tre' Butler, who ran for 344 vs. Buford in 2015. Sun Valley’s Albert Funderburke holds the Union Co. record with 456 yards in a win over Piedmont in 2014. Coleman is the 8th player to rush for 300+ yards in a game. Congrats Jaylen!!

Sun Valley's Maddox is Harvard bound!

Sun Valley senior Cameron Maddox is headed to Harvard! Maddox announced his commitment via twitter, “First, I want to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for being with me through this process. But I'm excited to announce that I'll be continuing my academic and athletic career at the best school in the world, Harvard University!! #bleedCR1MS9N #TheBrotherhood #camoneymaddox”.

Maddox was named 2nd team All-UCHSF as a junior after posting 73 tackles (31 solo), five interceptions and blocked two punts. As a sophomore was All-UCHSF and All-SCC after 31 Tackles, 5 Interceptions, 1 Sack, 1 Defensive TD. Cameron has been named a UCHF -Defensive Player of the Year candidate for 2018. Congrats Cameron!

Porter Ridge's Coleman headed to Duke!

Porter Ridge’s outstanding tailback Jaylen Coleman announced he has committed to Duke to continue his education and football career. Coleman announced this via his twitter account, “First and foremost, I would like to thank God for all of the blessings that he has bestowed upon me. Secondly, I would like to thank my mom, dad, sister and all other family members for helping me get to this point. Thank you to all of my coaches, teammates, and teachers for helping me achieve excellence on and off the field. I truly appreciate each and everyone of you. Thank you to all the coaches that recruited me. At this time, I would like to announce that I am 100% committed to continuing my academic and athletic career at DUKE UNIVERSITY. #DUKEGANT19”.

Coleman finished 3rd in Union Co. in rushing yards with 1287 yards and 15 TDs. Coleman, as a junior was named 2nd team All-UCHSF and ALL SW4A. Coleman was UnionCountyHighSchoolFootball.com's Player of the Week for Week 12. Congrats Jaylen!!!

Andy Capone (W)

Weddington names Capone Head coach!!

The Weddington Warriors have named their offensive coordinator Andy Capone as their new head football coach. didnt waste much time in nameing their head football coach. Former Warrior head coach Tim Carson announced in December he was stepping down effective January 31, 2018.

Weddington announced the move with a press release, "Andy Capone has been a part of the Weddington High School staff as a physical education teacher and assistant football and baseball coach for the past five years, most recently serving as the team’s offensive coordinator for the 2017 season. A Sun Valley High School and Appalachian State graduate, Andy has had a highly successful five years at Weddington." Weddington Athletic Director Michael Hart said, "Coach Capone exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated teacher and coach and is committed to the success of his student-athletes on and off of the field. Coach Capone holds a true passion for football and will continue to build strong relationships with his players and the community. We are excited for him to begin his new role and wish him the very best as he begins his journey." Capone was part of a Weddington coaching staff that secured several conference championships and has made appearances in two state championships, winning the 3AA State Title in 2016.

Capone was a standout football and baseball player at Sun Valley. Capone, played QB at Sun Valley threw for 2406 yards and 34 TDs as a senior leading Sun Valley to a 9-3 record and the state playoffs. Congrats Coach!

Weddington's Tim Carson set to retire in 2018

Tim Carson announced today that he will retire from his position as a Physical Education teacher and the head varsity football coach at Weddington High School, effective January 31, 2018. Carson has coached football in the Union County Public Schools for over twenty-five years, seven of which have been at Weddington High School. During his tenure at Weddington, Carson has secured several conference championships and has made appearances in two state championships, winning the 3AA State Title in 2016. Carson finished his seven years at Weddington with a 85-14 record and the 2016 State Championship! Congrats Coach!
